History of a Street Precinct
Biography - Harman Family


These four men, called Harman, lived or owned properties in the precinct around the same time starting in the late 19th century. There was nothing in the records to link them however giving the proximity that they lived to each other they are probably related in some way.
Harman, Alfred
152 Farrell Street 1890-1892 & 1894-1901 Property

He was an engineer. He owned this property until 1930 when it passed to Mrs Margaret Harman of 154 Mont Albert Road, Canterbury. She remained the owner until after 1950.

Alfred also owned the shop on the corner of Derham and Farrell Streets (148 Farrell Street Property) until 1930 when it also passed to Margaret.

The Rate Books give Alfred's address as 22 Derham Street Property while owner of the Farrell Street properties. Sands and McDougall's, however, does not list him as a resident of 22 Derham Street.

Alfred Harman, over a long period owned a number of properties in the precinct:

259 Bridge Street Property about 1910 to about 1939. In 1940 the owner was registered as Mrs Margaret Harman.

148; 150; 152 Farrell Street Property from before 1905 to at least 1920; in 1930 Mrs Margaret Harman owned them and was still registered as the owner in 1950.

Alfred Henry was born in Port Melbourne in 1889 and died in Balwyn in 1958. His father was Alfred Harman and his mother Margaret nee Chrimes. Alfred snr and Margaret had five children: Alfred Henry; Margaret Amelia; Clara Violet; Hazel Doris and Harold Rowland Percy.

Harman, Henry James

167 Farrell Street 1896-1898 Property

Henry James was baptised at St Joseph's 24 July 1890 and married Sarah Slaven at St Joseph's 21 April 1891. Sarah Slaven was the daughter of Mrs Slaven Biography who owned many houses in the area.

Harman, Percy

The registered owner of 175 and 177 Farrell Street Property from about 1920 to 1940 at least is a Percy Harman. This might be Alfred's brother, Harold Rowland Percy.

Harman, Joseph
