Robert was born Port Melbourne about 1938; married to Geraldine Evelyn Black in 1959 with two children both born in Port.

The Freyer family has had connections with Port Melbourne from at least 1890 when Ellen Freyer, widow of Allan Freyer, died in Port Melbourne.

Robert's father, Edward Freyer, was one of many grandchildren of Ellen and Robert who were born in Port Melbourne. Edward was born 20th May 1910 and married Elsie Olivia Holmes who was also born in Port 23 April 1911. She died in Garden City in 2003.

The Freyer family has a strong connection to the Port Melbourne Football Club. Robert and his father, Edward, played for Port and were both named on the half-forward line in the PMFC Team of the Century in 2003.
