Sydney Sims Anderson was born about 1888 and died in 1976.
He was married in 1917 to Delia Myrtle Day who died 1980.
There were three sons:
Claude,
Arnold,
Sydney Lewis
S. S. Anderson worked for the City of Port Melbourne for 58 years, retiring on 30th September 1959. He was only 13 when he started working for the Council. He was Town Clerk from 1920 until 1959, a record term.
When Mr Walter was Mayor, Mrs Anderson was mayoress, as Walter was not married. There is a photo taken on October 18, 1934, which shows H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester receiving an address from the Mayor of Port Melbourne with Mrs Anderson acting as mayoress, standing beside him.
Mr Anderson was a keen golfer, playing at the Sandridge course. For a number of years he played football for Port and had the reputation of being an exceptionally fair player.
All three of their sons served in New Guinea with the army and Syd was killed near Wewak in May 1944. Syd played football for Melbourne Football Club in the 1939,40 and 41 seasons, playing 52 games.
Claude Anderson currently lives in 119 Farrell Street. He moved there in 1926 at the age of 2 and remained there until he went to the war in 1942. After his marriage in 1948 at Holy Trinity, he and his wife Phyllis stayed at the house until around 1950 when they moved to 136 Clark Street. Claude moved back to Farrell Street in 1980 when his mother died.
As a boy he remembers playing cricket in the street, especially with Teddy Duffy. At school, he recalls his father was known as the boss of Port Melbourne. Claude says his father showed respect for people and he was brought up to show respect.
Claude started work at the 'Age' in 1939 and was there for 45 years. Like his father he only ever had the one employer, except for his time in the army. Claude's sons have also stayed with one employer. Claude's son Graeme played football with Collingwood.
