Parents: Lawrence (Lorenzo) and Mary A. CAELLI, born Nyora, Gippsland, educated St Joseph’s RC, Port Melbourne, 75 Bay Street (restaurant). No known grave. He was a 22-year-old forge operator when he enlisted giving his father (born in Italy) at 333 Nott Street as next of kin, later noted as “not recognised” and replaced with his mother. 4 Murphy Street on return of circular.

“I was with him when he was killed at Pozieres on Aug. 18th. He was shot in the stomach while we digging a “hop-over” trench beyond our front line. This occurred about 5 a.m. He died about 8 a.m. He was still in the trench when he died. I know nothing as to the burial of the body. We had to leave his body when we were relieved. He belonged to No. 1 platoon, A. Coy” (Sgt.C.A.Power, 2435) (Other eyewitnesses confirmed Caelli was shot in the stomach and died on a stretcher while waiting to be taken to a Field Ambulance)
