In October 1919, Leslie applied to Port Melbourne Council for the combined position of Dog Registration Officer, Meter Reader and Assistant Collector for Electric Supply. Over 100 applications were received*.

In his application, Leslie, stated that he had been a resident of Port Melbourne for ten years and was currently employed by Holdenson and Neilson Fresh Food Pty Ltd.

Another returned soldier, Sydney Ryan Carns was the successful applicant.
