Education Department Record of War service :
“Gunner Jack T. O’Brien, son of Mr. W. T. O’Brien, of 84 Bridge-street, Port Melbourne enlisted on the 6th of March, 1916 and embarked with Reinforcements to the 8th Field Artillery Brigade on the transport Medic on the 20th May. after training for some time in England, he went with his unit to France on the 31st December, 1916. He took part in the operations at Messines (27th June, 1917) and Ypres (October and November). He was at Flanders until March, 1918 when he went with his unit to the Somme and took part in the defence of Amiens and the various offensives that followed. He stayed in France and Belgium until March, 1919, then returned to England. He returned to Australia on the transport Borda on the 27th of June, 1919, and was discharged on 11th of August, Prior to enlisting he was clerk in the Education Department.
