Born 1877, he originally served as Private, 131 with 2 Victorian Mounted Rifles when the family were at 20 Nelson Street, Port Melbourne and after he had spent some years with the volunteer Victorian Mounted Rangers. The connection is somewhat obscure, but Frederick was noted at a send-off to three volunteers from the Lilydale area. The family had, however, been in Port Melbourne for several years, both Frederick and John included on a WW1 Roll of Honour at the Graham Street State School. There was little mentioned about his enlistment, but Frederick became a regular contributor to the Port Melbourne Standard, one of his letters appearing around every second week in early 1900 before he was hospitalised with enteric fever and repatriated back to Australia in July, 1900. He later served as 906, Private, with the 5 VMR when he noted as a member of the Victorian Mounted Rangers in the Volunteer Forces.
He volunteered again in February, 1901 and was accepted for the 5 VMR, serving as a Corporal. On enlistment, he was the licensee of the Clare Castle Hotel in Graham Street, Port Melbourne, the license transferred to his wife Ethel for the duration. He served as 2230, Lance Corporal with the Australian Army service Corps before being returned in February, 1916 suffering from neurasthenia, a now obscure term then meaning “psychological disorder characterized by chronic fatigue and weakness, loss of memory …” and sometimes attributed to shell shock. Born Williamstown, 1877, died in Caulfield, 1938 at 60 years, interred Springvale Crematorium.
