Known as Jack, he was born 1875 and was noted on volunteering as a station hand from Port Melbourne, the family shown in 1903 Electoral Rolls at 26 Derham Street after earlier being in Nelson Street for a number of years. Although it was not uncommon with the far greater numbers of embarkations during WW1, the brothers Frederick and John are a rare example of serving with consecutive Regimental Numbers with the 5 Victorian Mounted Riflles during the South African campaign.
Born Williamstown, 1875, in much the tradition of the times, his second given name was the maiden name of his mother, died Melbourne General Hospital, East Melbourne, 1925 at 50 years of age.

John Stockton DALGARNO died in the Melbourne Hospital, East Melbourne on 13 April, 1925, aged 50 following an accident when he ran and tried to catch a moving tram at the corner of Market and Collins street and fell between the dummy and trailer, A Coroner’s Inquiry returned a verdict of accidental death and attached no blame to the crew of the tram; there was a suggestion that Dalgarno was under the influence of drink at the time. He was single and living at 22 Stokes Street, Port Melbourne with brothers Fred and Percy and a sister Amy (Mrs Mather). (The Argus, 28 April, 1925) http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/2086965
