Wife: Mrs Nita GARDINER, born Happy Valley, South Australia. A 39-year-old labourer, he enlisted with wife at 199 Clark Street, she died in 1921, medals were held in trust for their son, then with a guardian in Northcote. No circular returned.

“A Wallie Gardiner of the 24th Reinf. who enlisted and came with me, a married man from Port Melbourne, Vic., a coal labourer, about 22 or 23 was wounded that day at Passchendaele … aeroplanes spotted us and I got a piece of shell in the head and dropped into a shell-hole. Gardiner was in the next shell-hole with two others and a shell burst there and Gardiner was wounded … Gardiner tried to get out of the hole and as he did a sniper got him, I think in the chest … I sang out to him ‘How are you, Wallie?’ and got no answer so I fancy it was serious … there was also a Sergt Wallie Gardiner, a Battalion man, wounded, but he is back” (Osborne, Cpl., 1889)
