Herein lies a story spanning 140 years of the Edwards family from Staffordshire and Wales. They came to Australia in 1857 and this story tells of their arrival in Geelong, Queenscliff and finally purchasing land and settling in Sandridge/Port Melbourne.
It is about two streets in Port Melbourne, Rouse and Beach Streets, and the lives of some of the people within those streets. It is important to preserve their history and remember the personalities and characters responsible for that history.
You will read about a proud farrier and his family, the sparks and sounds from his anvils; the legend of a Port Melbourne son and his famous yacht the S.J.S. The Port Melbourne Yacht Club, races won and lost, a monkey for a yacht, dinner plates to win a race, and the connection with an Australian Prime Minister.
Thomas Edwards and Family was written, because I inherited a matchbox sized diary, written by my mother Nancy McPherson Morton (nee Edwards), which contained tiny pages of notes about her great grandparents and their lives. Further research just had to be done. I think she may have quietly intended this to happen as there were just enough clues to enable me to complete her previously untold family history.
