John married Minnie Hall at the parish church in Bury, England on 2 July 1918. On returning to Australia with his English wife and their three month old son, George on board the “Indarra”, John was welcomed home by 150 friends at a social evening held at the Temperance Hall on 8 September 1919.

In the early 1920s the family were living at 30 Raglan Street, Port Melbourne almost directly behind the Flannery family home in Ingles Street. Both dwellings have long since been demolished to make way for community housing.
