Ernest Turnbull after his return worked briefly for the Repatriation Department and became actively involved in the Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Imperial League of Australia, serving as Victorian president from 1921 to 1924 and again from 1926 to 1928; later acting federal preident. In 1929 he represented Australia at the British Empire Service League Convention in London and was made a Life Member of the R.S.S.I.L.A. in 1937 when he was involved with the Legacy movement.
Turnbull became involved with the film industry in 1923 when appointed assistant publicity officer to the Government Cineman and Photographic Branch; after working in several key positions within the industry and running his own film distributorship, he became managing director of Hoyts Theatre in December, 1941 and some ten years later acted as Chairman of Fox Film Corporation (Australasia) who held the controlling interest to Hoyts.
After a brief retirement in 1963, Turnbull returned in 1966 as chairman of Hoyts Theatres Ltd and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation (Aust) Ltd. He was appointed a C.B.E. in 1960. He died on 24 July 1974 at Rose Bay, Sydney.
