Private, 6 Infantry, died of wounds 12 April, 1918, France, aged 20, commemorated Namps-au-Val British Cemetery, Picardie, France.
Mother: Annie STONE, born Port Melbourne. He enlisted as a 19-year-old labourer with a brother Ernest George STONE at 80 Spring Street, Port Melbourne as next of kin, later changed to his mother Annie at the same address. Roy gives his address on his application to enlist as the Star Hotel, Clarendon Street, South Melbourne and his father’s whereabouts were given as unknown. His Attestation papers show his permanent address in Australia as 80 Spring Street, Port Melbourne. Stone died from bomb wounds at 41 Casualty Clearing Station, also noted as having earlier been rejected. No circular returned.

“The Aust. Division to which he belonged was returning to the north of France, entraining at Amiens. Pte. Stone was on the baggage guard at this station and was hit by a piece of H.E. shell. His wound was reported to this office on the 14th April, followed by a notification of his death from wounds on 15.4.1918. At present, I am unable to obtain details of his burial, but it is certain that he was decently buried, perhaps around Amiens (W.R. Anderson, H.Q., 6 Battn., A.I.F)
