Served during the Boer Was as 43615, Trooper, 36 Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry of the British Army.
“Cr. H. C. Southward, the retiring Mayor of Port Melbourne, was born in South Africa, where he had a distinguished scholastic career. The Boer War, Zulu War and Great War saw him in active service. His business activities have taken him to all parts of the world. Twenty years ago he settled in Port Melbourne, where he at once associated himself with social and charitable work. His work in the Council, which he entered, three years ago, has been marked by his sound business ability. Courteous always with a definite scheme of progress always before him, he has earned the respect of all sections of the community”.
