He enlisted as a 19-year-old wire weaver from Northcote while with an elder brother, their mother at 85 Pickles Street Port Melbourne as next of kin. His father was at Redfern, Sydney; two other brothers enlisted from Melbourne listing him as next of kin, 1039, Frederick James SHAW, killed in action 2 October, 1917, and 924, Walter Harold SHAW, died of wounds, 3 December, 1916. Their father returned the circular from Auburn showing identical birthplaces and education and place of association as Clifton Hill, but rather strangely there is no reference to their mother or Port Melbourne in either of the latter two archives.
