Hugh was an active member of the Ross Street Baptist Church congregation. He played for the Baptist Football Club who gave him and fellow player, Henry Tindle, a parade at the church on Sunday, 16 May 1915.

While his mate, Henry, was given a send-off by Mr & Mrs Schaefer of Evans Street on Thursday 29 May 1915. Hugh had contracted pneumonia while in camp and was not able to embark for the front. Hugh was subsequently discharged due to the effects of pneumonia and pleurisy.
