Enlisted at Brunswick, the same day as his brother Albert Rialland.

Private, 5 Infantry, killed in action 3 April, 1917, France, aged 24, commemorated Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.

Parents: Peter (late) and Mrs A Elizabeth RIALLAND; wife: Mrs Grace RIALLAND, born Port Melbourne. Rialland enlisted as 23-year-old mattress maker with his mother in Flemington Road, North Melbourne. No known grave (an eyewitness suggested he was shot through the head at night by a sniper, but his body could not be located the following morning), no circular returned, but a Death Notice reveals a baby daughter, Jean. Two brothers, Albert RIALLAND, 1899, enlisted showing his mother in Albion Street, Brunswick, also born Port Melbourne, and James Peter RIALLAND, 197, born Brunswick.

    “At Yarrow Bank near Thilloy I was with him when he shot by a sniper through the head. He was taken away from the post where he fell during the night. I have not seen his grave” (Pte A Herring, 6276, No. 1 Australian Hospital, Rouen)
