Brian Membrey
Served during the Boer War as 1287, Private, 5 Victorian Mounted Rifles, shown on enlisted as a driver with Swallow & Ariel, Port Melbourne, Born Sandridge, 1883, he was actually John Edward Pike, died Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in 1970, his age listed as 87. At the time ofhis Boer War enlistment, the family were at 103 Princes Street, an interesting address where their father Amos ran a prominent estate agency and their mother Mary operated a dairy. A brother William George PIKE also served in South Africa as a Private with the 1st Victorian Mounted Rifles

“Private E. Pike (wounded) is a native of Port Melbourne, and the fifth son of the late Amos and Mary Pike. He was a member of the late Harbor Trust Battery, also went to South Africa with the Fifth Contingent, for which he received a medal and three clasps. Afterwards he served for five years in the Australian Navy, being on the Challenger and Psvche”
