    Believed 1864, Sapper Thomas Joseph O’Donnell, killed in action 20 July, 1916 and interred Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, Bethune, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Nearly all of his military archive places his father as a railway ganger in Morwell, but O’Donnell enlisted in Melbourne where he would almost certainly have been boarding and working in his calling as a civil servant. Pages 36-38 of his National Archive file confirm this by showing advice of his death being communicated to the Commanding Officer, 52nd Infantry at the Drill Hall, Sturt Street, South Melbourne. The 52nd Infantry under the Compulsory Military Training scheme encompassed Port Melbourne and the northern section of South Melbourne between City Road and the Yarra.
