Parents: John and Mrs Agnes OAKES, born Port Melbourne. He enlisted as a 24-year-old wharf waterman with the MMBW from 39 Camden Street, Balaclava, his father shown as next of kin and later at 10 Hawsleigh Avenue, Balaclava. A somewhat confusing Death Notice mentions him as an only son, but then notes a brother Frederick. No known grave. Also listed on the St Kilda Roll.

    OAKES – Officially reported killed in action in France, 26th April, 1918, Signaller Cecil H. Oakes, the dearly loved only son of John and Agnes Oakes, 39? Camden street, Balaclava, the loved brother of Fredk. (Fred) Oakes, aged 26 years. Late of Metropolitan Board of Works.
