Sergeant, 39 Infantry, killed in action 8 September, 1918, France, aged 27, commemorated Buire Communal Cemetery, France.

Parents: William and Mary Elizabeth MATTHEWS (both late), sister Miss Ethel May MATTHEWS, born Port Melbourne, educated SS. He enlisted in Dimboola as a 24-year-old farm labourer, a sister in Church Street, Richmond as next of kin. She was later in Sydney, the serviceman’s war medals passed to his eldest brother, Dimboola nominated as place of association.

    “We were in action at Hamil Wood near Peronne. Matthews was hit by a shell and died whilst being carried away on a stretcher. He was buried in a cemetery near the village with a lot of others. I was in the line at the time and did not see the burial. He was not with us long. He joined us at Cardonnet on the Somme. We used to call him “Dick”. He was in “A” Company, aged about 30, height about 5ft. 8″ (No 2858, Private R.G.Arnott, 39th Battn., “A’ Coy)
