Samuel’s wife Eva appears to have been living with him in Yanco when he enlisted at Cootamundra but by the time he embarked for the front her address was given as 386 Graham Street, Port Melbourne and his enlistment papers also show a change of address to 385 Princes Street.
Around the end of December 1916, Eva found a purse in Collins Street, Melbourne containing over £7 and some papers including the address of the owner in St Kilda. Eva visited the lady in question and returned the purse to her. On 6 January 1917, Eva lost her own handbag, including her purse containing over £4, in Graham Street between Bay Street and Princes Street. The story was reported in the Standard newspaper on 13 January 1917 and at that point her possessions had not been located.
