The National Archives file (page 29) held for Robert Avenel or Avenal BENNETT reveals that he was the brother-in-law of Charles Patrick CARDWELL; the latter dying in June, 1922 at the East Malvern residence of his sister, Robert BENNETT’s widow. This may in some part explain why CARDWELL used the assumed name BENNETT. There is nothing in his military record or the Death Notice below to suggest his early death was due to military service …

CARDWELL.—On the 4th June, at the residence of his sister (Mrs Arbrew), “Avenel.” Paxton-street, East Malvern, Charles Patrick, the dearly beloved youngest son of Emma and the late Charles Edward Cardwell of Seymour and Port Melbourne, the loving brother of Mary, Charles (deceased) William (deceased), Charlotte, Walter, Ada, James, George, Nellie, Alice and Emmie, aged 29 years
