Apparently known as “Percy”, Brotherton returned with a gunshot wound to the left elbow in October, 1917 and was discharged as medically unfit. His archive simply reads “died of discharge” with no cause identified, but his passing in Melbourne Hospital rather than a military facility suggests his death was not related to his war service. This is confirmed by a claim for a pension by a step-sister being rejecteon those grounds .
