William Henry Birch returned to Australia on the 1914 Special Leave granted to those that had served four years; he died of unknown causes in the Caulfield Repatriation Hospita1, 26 August, 1926 and was interred in New Melbourne General Cemetery. There is no trace of his marriage to Margaret in local registrations.
