Alford’s archives suggest he had previously served with the Victorian Naval Contingent of 200 men during the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, but virtually nothing is recorded of this brief action. He married Agnes Frances BUTLER in 1895, there were eight children of the marriage, the first in 1896 and including, remarkably, a son in South Melbourne in 1918 after George returned with the rank of Sergeant; Agnes would have been around 42 years of age.
He died at 64 years of age in Caulfield (Repatriation Hospital?) on 22 September, 1932 and was interred in Brighton Cemetery, Agnes in Melbourne in 1953 at 77 years; their son Ernest Albert Alford (included) died of tuberculosis in the Caulfield Repatriation Hospital on 11 July, 1924, at just 29 years of age, his death officially attributed to War Service.
